Case Study: Black Cultural Council of Odessa (BCCO) Website Redesign (2023)

Project Overview

In 2023, I partnered with the Black Cultural Council of Odessa (BCCO) to redesign their website with a clear goal: create a digital home that accurately reflected the organization’s cultural importance, community impact, and future vision.

BCCO plays a vital role in preserving and celebrating Black culture in Odessa, Texas. However, their existing website no longer supported their growing needs — both visually and functionally. The redesign focused on clarity, accessibility, and storytelling, ensuring the site could effectively serve the community while supporting outreach, engagement, and growth.

The Challenge

BCCO needed a website that could:

  • Clearly communicate their mission and history

  • Highlight events, programs, and community initiatives

  • Be easy to update and manage internally

  • Feel welcoming, credible, and representative of the community it serves

The existing site lacked structure, visual cohesion, and modern usability, making it difficult for visitors to understand BCCO’s impact or take action.

The Approach

I approached the redesign with a community-first mindset, balancing cultural storytelling with practical functionality.

Key priorities included:

  • A clean, intuitive site architecture

  • Improved readability and accessibility

  • A visual system that felt respectful, celebratory, and contemporary

  • Mobile-friendly design for broad community access

Rather than over-designing, the goal was to create a flexible framework that could grow with the organization.

Design & Development

The new BCCO website was designed to:

  • Center BCCO’s mission and cultural significance on the homepage

  • Provide clear pathways to events, history, and involvement

  • Use typography, color, and imagery to reflect cultural pride without visual clutter

  • Perform consistently across devices and screen sizes

Behind the scenes, the site was built to be manageable for a nonprofit team, allowing updates without technical friction.

The Outcome

The redesigned website delivered:

  • A clearer, more compelling narrative about BCCO’s role in Odessa

  • Improved usability and navigation for community members

  • A professional digital presence suitable for partnerships, grants, and outreach

  • A scalable foundation for future programming and growth

Most importantly, the site became a tool BCCO could confidently use to engage the community it serves.

Why This Project Matters

This project wasn’t just about a visual refresh — it was about aligning culture, purpose, and technology. By creating a site that honored BCCO’s history while supporting its future, the redesign helped strengthen the organization’s digital voice and visibility.

It’s a reminder that good nonprofit web design isn’t about trends — it’s about clarity, accessibility, and respect for the community behind the mission.
